Please read the message below from the Toyonaka Sister City Association and view the FLIER for the fundraiser coming up on June 15th!
Beginning in 1979, every two years the San Mateo-Toyonaka Sister City Association selects twenty All-Star Goodwill Ambassador baseball players (ages 10-12), representing each of San Mateo’s youth baseball and softball leagues, to represent the United States and the City of San Mateo in a baseball cultural exchange program with Toyonaka, Japan. Every two years, visits alternate between San Mateo and Toyonaka. This year, marks the 40th Anniversary of the program as the team travels to Japan as part of this storied exchange program. They will play different Toyonaka All-Star teams in a series of games as well as interacting with the Toyonaka players as we are hosted as visiting players in Japanese homes to experience Japanese family living.
In order to continue this great tradition of cultural exchange, the San Mateo players need to raise $80,000 for the team’s traveling expenses, uniforms, equipment and gifts for our hosts. We will be hosting a Fundraising Event on Saturday, June 15th from 6-11pm at the Beresford Recreation Center called “Toyonaka or Bust!” The event will feature music, food, drinks, silent and live Auctions, games of chance, and lots of fun!
SMNLL players Brian Ferreira, Bobby Kelley, Jordan Kiaaina, Ben Sakal, Kurt Schaffer and George Schmidt will be apart of this memorable and historic trip to Toyonaka, Japan. Please consider attending the fundraiser and/or go to www.smsistercity.com to learn more.
