2025 Spring Season - San Mateo National LL

This registration session will allow you to complete contact information, sign up for participation, and submit payment for the Spring 2025 season at San Mateo National Little League ("SMNLL"). If you are a returning member of our community, welcome back! If you are new to our league, we are thrilled to have you join our SMNLL family! Our early bird registration discount of $50 per registration is available through November 15th, 2024 for all divisions except Wiffle Ball. We also offer family registration discounts. The early bird and family registration discounts are applied at checkout.

SMNLL has been serving our community since 1955. Some great athletes began their baseball careers and excelled within our league over our long history, including Tom Brady, Nick Vanos, and many others who went on to play baseball at the high school and collegiate levels.

The core mission of SMNLL throughout the years is a commitment to providing the best baseball experience possible for our:

Players by teaching the fundamentals of baseball, as well as the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship
Families, by providing a safe, positive and fun baseball experience at an affordable cost.
Coaches, by supporting their efforts to provide the highest standard of positive coaching appropriate for each age group
Community, by being an active par of San Mateo through our outreach to families, schools and local businesses

SMNLL is about creating winners, not necessarily reflected on the scoreboard, but from using the baseball experience to teach our players the importance of hard work, commitment, being a good teammate, and how to be effective leaders. All of these skill sets are important skills in athletic and outside of the playing field.

Division Background:

This division uses a spring-loaded pitching machine to provide a step-up from the Coach-Pitch environment of the Single A division, while also enabling a high frequency of balls being put in play to promote as much defensive and baserunning development as possible during the first half of the season. During the second half of the season (including playoffs) the division transitions to a modified kid-pitch format, which assists players develop their skills, maintain a good pace play, and ensure a high-frequency of balls hit into play, through not allowing batters to walk. If a pitcher throws 4 balls in an at bat, a coach will come in to pitch to finish the at-bat.
This division is where scorekeeping, standings, and playoffs are introduced to players in this age group.
Some Little League rules have been also modified for this division (e.g., no stealing of bases, one-base on an overthrow, etc.) to continue to foster player development through allowing for players to attempt to make plays and not having mistakes have significant negative consequences (e.g., players taking multiple bases on an errant throw, not stealing bases on catchers who are just learning the position, etc.).
AA teams typically play a 8 - 10 game schedule, with one weekend game (typically on Sundays) per week, usually at Martens field or Los Prados.
AA teams generally practice twice per week (one field practice and one batting practice), usually with one practice on a weekday and one on Saturday, but timing is at the discretion of the coaches and field / batting cage availability.

Division Player Age Range: Baseball Ages 7 - 9 (please refer to the Little League Age Chart for more info on baseball ages). Additional information:

Baseball 9-year-olds are required to complete an annual player evaluation (in early January) for coaches and the league to assess their skills for appropriate division placement, and are eligible for selection in either the PCL / AAA divisions or the AA division.
Baseball 9-year-olds not selected to the PCL / AAA divisions will be included in the AA division player pool for and selected through a draft process.
Baseball 7 and 8-year olds who are deemed by coaches and independent evaluators to be skilled enough are selected to a AA team through a draft process. Players at these ages that are not selected will be placed on a Single A team.

AAA / PCL

PCL & AAA Division Background:

These are competitive divisions with standings and playoffs.
Regular season includes 14 - 18 games, with games played twice per week (one weekday and one weekend game). Teams practice twice per week (one field practice and one batting practice).
Whether we offer both PCL and AAA, or just AAA, is an annual determination made by the league Board based on the player pool at these ages and the skill profile across that pool.
SMNLL's ultimate intention for these divisions, and across our league, is that our players play in divisions that best fit their stage of development and play with players that are similarly skilled and not always force progression through our divisions to enable greater engagement and playing time (both in totality and across positions).

PCL

In 2024, SMNLL added a division for players within this age range, the PCL division, which other leagues locally and across the country have offered, and is geared to players in this age level that are more advanced in their skills and development and are on the cusp of the Majors division (highest level of competition in Little League).
The division promotes a higher level of competition and emphasizes more of the standard rules of Little League baseball than the AAA division, and is geared toward the players that are evaluated to be ready for that.
Some Little League rules are modified for the PCL division, such as no stealing of home (forcing runs to be scored based on balls put in play as much as possible), and lower pitch count limits.

AAA

While the rules between PCL and AAA are largely the same, there are a few developmentally focused rule modifications for the AAA division. The primary difference is a modified kid-pitch format for the first half of the season to allow for players to continue to develop on the mound and assists with defensive development, maintain a good pace play, through having a high-frequency of balls hit into play by not allowing batters to walk. If a pitcher throws 4 balls in an at bat, a coach will come in to pitch to finish the at-bat.
The modified kid-pitch format transitions to a full kid-pitch format, which allows walks, during the second half of the season (including playoffs).

Division Player Age Range: Baseball Ages 9 - 11 (please refer to the Little League Age Chart for more info on baseball ages). Additional information:

Baseball age 9 - 11 year-olds are required to complete an annual player evaluation (in early January) for coaches and the league to assess their skills for appropriate division placement
Baseball Age 11 & 10 year-olds are eligible to be selected into either the Majors division or the PCL / AAA divisions based on their stage of development. Players not selected to a Majors team, are then placed into the PCL player pool, and then players not selected to a PCL team are placed in the AAA player pool.
Baseball 9-year-olds are eligible to be selected into either the PCL / AAA divisions or the AA division. Players not selected to a PCL / AAA team, are then placed into the AA player pool.
